IPhone4s / 5 vs Samsung Galaxy SII vs Motorola Droid Bionic : See Who Wins

Posted: 18 Jan 2012 10:11 PM PST

Motorola Droid Bionic and Samsung Galaxy S2 are iPhone4s / 5's strongest rivals and when they finally make a landfall on the US soil, both phones have undergone a number of upgrades and changes compared to their predecessors. Unlike its original version, the Galaxy S2 will run Gingerbread (Android 2.3) and sport the usual TouchWiz UI.

SamsungGalaxyS2-i9100 Samsung's flagship is already available on AT&T and Sprint as Samsung Epic 4G Touch. The Galaxy S2 features an 8Mp camera with LED flash and it can record 1080p HD videos, which promises the richest video playback experience available on a smartphone. The phone also comes with a 2Mp front facing camera for video conference.

Motorola's phone was also redesigned a number of times. Originally, the phone looks much like the Motorola Atrix, however, right now it shares the same overall design with Motorola Droid 3, while the Droid Bionic doesn't have a slider QWERTY. The Droid Bionic features a larger RAM and the chipset is upgraded to TI OMAP P4430 from the original Tegra 2 AP20H. Unfortunately, the battery capacity is lower than the original phone.

motorola_droid_bionic Most features of iPhone 5 are still staying in the mythical realm of rumors (that is, if iPhone 5 really exist, which I really doubt), however, some of them are already known and confirmed. The iPhone 5 will have iOS 5, the latest version of Apple's mobile platform. The phone will be features A5 processor, 8Mp camera and a thinner and slimmer design.

However, unlike many phones, Apple's upcoming smartphone is seeing unprecedented demand far ahead its release and the phone may eventually come Q4 2011. A research showed that about a third of respondents will buy the iPhone 5, which is slightly higher than the demand for pre-launch iPhone 4 of 25 percent.

apple-iphone-4-white Without doubt, in the Q4 2011, we will see the heated battle between Motorola Droid Bionic, Samsung Galaxy S2 and Apple iPhone 5. These phones are still somewhere in the hype cloud and it is likely they can live up to the promises.

Here are a few things why you should buy Motorola Droid Bionic or Samsung Galaxy S2 over the Apple iPhone 4s / iPhone 5 Or you can read it as why the iPhone 4s is making suckers out of its buyes:

Processor

phone-circuit AT&T and Sprint versions of Samsung Galaxy S2 are packed with Mali 400MP Orion chipset and ARM Cortex A9 1.2 GHz dual-core processor. T-Mobile's version is slightly more powerful with a 1.5 GHz dual-core Qualcomm's processor and 1 GB of RAM. The Motorola Droid Bionic offers an ARM Cortex A9 1GHz dual-core processor on a TI OMAP 4430 chipset. To make games and video playback smoother, the phone sports PowerVR SGX540, a high end 3D graphics accelerator. Although Droid Bionic's processor has lower clock number, in some cases it performs significantly better than Nvidia Tegra2 1.2GHz dual-core processor due to the inclusion of the ARM SIMD engine.

On the other hand, Apple iPhone 5 will have the A5 processor, which is also used in the iPad 2 and it's doubtful that it would exceed 1.2 GHz. Apple's phone will face a much stiffer competition in the 2012 from Samsung Galaxy S3, which is rumored to feature a 2 GHz quad-core processor.

Operating System

phone-os Apple's upcoming smartphone will be powered by the iOS 5. Although Android 2.3 has slightly less refined interface compared to the latest iOS versions, it is a more flexible and customizable. Many new features in iOS5 are already available in Android since years ago. The iOS 5 will have cloud synchronization, improved notification bar, Widgets and better Twitter integration. Besides, devices run by Android 2.3 (for smartphone) and 3.0 (for tablet), iPhone 5 will also face competition from Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) devices.

The latest Android version runs across smartphones and tablets. Additionally, Android, as an open source platform, inspires increased liberty, flexibility and transparency among users, apps developers and phone manufacturers. The OS is made available publicly, which allows anyone to modify and distribute the customized source code.

Any individual or developer team can access and tweak the Android source code and improve the whole platform. However, freedom and flexibility are double-edged swords, as some individual may have less than agreeable aims, for example, they can manipulate certain loopholes for their own gain. However, Android, as an open-source is backed by a large community and any weakness is usually fixed quickly. On the other hand, because iOS 5 is a closed platform, the same thing can't be expected to happen.

Design

phone-designs Since the original iPhone, subsequent iPhone models receive only slight changes in design. However, Motorola Droid Bionic and Samsung Galaxy S2 are released in different designs and hardware specifications.

Sprint

It unveiled its own versions of Samsung Galaxy S2, which is similar to the basic specification, expect for the slightly large 4.5" display. The version is called Epic Touch 4G.

AT&T

Its version will retain the same 4.3" display.

T-Mobile

The company hasn't revealed the official name of its Galaxy S2 version, but a phone called "Hercules" will have a 4.5" display.

Verizon

It will release Samsung Droid Prime as its top-of-the-line Android smartphone, which will support LTE. It appears that Verizon is somewhat unconvinced that Samsung Galaxy S2 and its derivatives will be able to compete with the iPhone 5. The Droid Prime may come with Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), which will offer the iPhone 5 a stiffer competition.

On the other hand, Motorola Droid Bionic has undergone several phases of change. At first it is similar to Motorola Atrix, but now it appears like a keyboard-less Motorola Droid 3. The iPhone 4 was severely criticized for its antenna issue, due to the presence of metal band around the phone that can reduce signal reception. It is likely that the iPhone 5 will feature multiple antennas and will be thoroughly tested to prevent another embarrassment.

Display

Motorola Droid Bionic has 4.3" qHD TFT touchscreen display (256 ppi, 540 x 960 resolution), while Samsung Galaxy S2 features Super-AMOLED Plus display. Sprint and T-Mobile released Galaxy S2 with slightly larger display, a 4.52" Super-AMOLED Plus screen (206 ppi, 800 x 480 resolution). The iPhone 5 will have 3.7" or 4" display. At its smallest dimension, the 4.3" display of the original Galaxy S2 dwarves Apple's upcoming smartphone. With major manufacturers favoring displays higher than 4" in high-end Android phones, it's interesting to see how Apple would reply.

Flash

phone-flash-streaming The popular technology enriches Web experience and it's inclusion is considered as an advantage of Android phones. However, Flash players require more resources than typical video player apps. A Flash player needs to work on top of video rendering, as a result, hardware-accelerated rendering is not as straightforward as normal video player. At this moment, Flash is only supported by Mac OS 9/X.

Just like many Android devices, Motorola Droid Bionic and Samsung Galaxy S2 support Flash. The Galaxy S2 has an advantage, because it supports full HD video playback for Flash videos.

However, Apple argued that Flash is a huge security risk; it reduces battery life and causes a number of stability problems. Instead of Adobe's Flash, Apple favors a combination of Javascript, CSS and HTML5. Although, latest Apple devices don't feature Flash integration, Adobe said that it is possible to implement the technology on iOS devices using an app that exports Flash contents to HTML5-compatible formats.

Adobe will release new solutions for video streaming, including Flash Access 3.0 and Flash Media Server 4.5. They will allow iOS devices, such as iPad, iPhone and iPod to run Flash videos, by converting them to HTTP Live Streaming, an Apple-friendly format.

Connectivity

phone-connectivity Samsung Galaxy S2 supports a fast 3G connection (up to 21 Mbps), while an improved Galaxy S2 version, will support LTE connection (up to 42 Mbps). Some rumors say that iPhone 5 released in AT&T network will support 4G connection. Presently, LTE network is being planned in AT&T network and it is being constructed in Verizon network.

Although HSPA+ is a member of 3G family, curiously AT&T markets HSPA+ connections as 4G. This could be a misleading campaign, because HSPA+ is still not a 4G technology, this could be an AT&T's attempt to sell iPhone 5 as a 'fake' 4G device, despite the fact that it doesn't support LTE connectivity. Motorola Droid Bionic will also feature LTE 4G technology.

Battery and memory

phone-battery Users of Motorola Droid Bionic and Samsung Galaxy S2 have the privilege of getting a removable battery and expandable memory card. Apple's devices are infamous for their usage limitations, for example, these devices don't support expandable memory and users can't replace the battery.

Although Apple never reveals the RAM capacity, the amount is usually less than the RAM capacity of the competing high-end devices. Samsung Galaxy S2 may not have the best battery life on the planet, but it can last for one day with normal use and two days when used for only texting and voice calls.

When used very intensively, Samsung Galaxy S2 can last for 10 hours and the phone is powered by a 1650 mAh battery. If the iPhone 5 will have 4G connectivity, the feature may further reduce the battery life to less than 8 hours. The Motorola Droid Bionic will feature a whopping 1735 mAh power pack, which can keep the device runs longer. Motorola Droid Bionic's RAM is upgraded from 512 MB to 1 GB, the phone also sports 2 GB of ROM.

Camera

Samsung Galaxy S2 and Motorola Droid Bionic features 8Mp rear facing camera and it can record and play 1080p HD videos. The iPhone 5 will also have 8Mp camera, but it's still uncertain whether the camera will support 1080p videos.

Security

cell-phone-security1

iOS and Android use different security approaches. Apple implements a stringent verification system for new apps to prevent malware from infiltrating the App Market. Although, Google's Android Market doesn't filter new apps, malware will have limited effects on Android devices because an Android app runs in an isolated container. Although both Android and iOS have security weaknesses, these mobile platforms are still more secure than PCs.

There were less than 20 vulnerabilities found on Android, on the other hand, users and security experts found approximately 200 vulnerabilities on iOS. Google appeared to patch vulnerabilities faster at an average 8 days, compared to Apple at 12 days. Although both platforms are entirely secure, Android holds an advantage over iOS because Android apps can't access the OS directly.

Open source and apps

Although Android Market offers far less apps than Apple's App Market, a huge number of Android apps are free. Additionally, Android is an open source platform, which allows anyone to improve the system and immediately fix any bug and security hole.

Price

phone-cost

Samsung Galaxy S was considered as a direct competitor to iPhone 4. Samsung's phone had a slightly better specification and could be upgraded to Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) from 2.1 (Éclair). In addition, Galaxy S was significantly cheaper than the iPhone 4, which allowed Samsung to offer better value for consumers. The pattern is repeated again in 2011 with Samsung Galaxy SII and iPhone4s and will be repeated again in 2012 with Samsung Galaxy S3 and the iPhone 5 (if it ever comes out).

Conclusion

androidwinner

The iPhone 5 still remains a rumor and iPhone 4s is the reality and it can not stack up to the Samsung Galaxy SII or Motororola Bionic in features. So what you have is a renewed iPhone 4 with few tweaks thrown here and there and than repackaged and sold as iPhone4s at higher price (I am getting really convinced that the "s" in iphone4s stands for suckers. Clearly the iPhone 4s sucks and it is better to spend your money on buying a high end Android based phone such as the Samsung Galaxy SII.

Facebook unveils 60 apps under latest expansion plan

Posted: 18 Jan 2012 09:31 PM PST

Facebook logo Facebook expects developers to come up with thousands more applications

Facebook is adding a series of new applications to let users share such things as photos, travel or fashion.

The online social network firm unveiled more than 60 new apps that users can share on their Facebook profiles, known as their Timeline.

Users can already share the music they are listening to or news articles they are reading.

But this latest development expands the number of apps significantly.

Facebook is calling it "frictionless sharing". Once users sign up for the apps, they will automatically share your activity through Facebook.

The company, tipped for a $100bn initial public offering, is looking for new ways to get people to spend more time on the site - which will attract more advertising.

The latest apps include Ticketmaster, movie review site Rotten Tomatoes, and Foodspotting. But developers are expected to create many more apps.

"We think that thousands of applications will be built on this platform in the coming weeks and months," said Carl Sjogreen, Facebook director of platform products, at the launch of the apps in San Francisco.

Timeline is a feature that Facebook says can turn users' personal profiles into virtual scrapbooks.

It can over the years catalogue aspects of the user's life and preferences, from travel to favourite books.

INFORMATION OF Wikipedia Black-out Day Against SOPA & PIPA

If you try to visit Wikipedia tomorrow (January 18, 2012), you will get a black-out. They are not alone: Boing Boing, Reddit, Google and others in a NetCoalition are joining in a protest against the two bills pending in Congress currently against online piracy: SOPA (HR 3261) and PIPA (S968). Check their home pages for various forms of protest.

The NetCoalition.com website (not the .org one!) has a lot of useful information on the bills if you need to do research on this area.

Here is a nice thumbnail of the opposition to SOPA and PIPA, though you can find a LOT more out there on the net. Briefly, there is concern that the provisions are vague, allow far more over-reaching by copyright holders than the current DMCA, so that they could do take down notices to web providers, but with lots more power behind it. For instance, SOPA provides that if a web host does not immediately blacklist an accused poster on their service, the web host would then have to fight along with the poster. According to Google, more than 50% of the take-down notices it has received under the DMCA have been by businesses out to drive out competitors, rather than really about copyright issues. This is liable to be just as true in the future. Copyright take down notices are being used as an anti-competitive tool to prevent existing web businesses from having to compete against new start-ups who want to provide either a new service or better service.

Here is a terrific, detailed review of the SOPA bill by a copyright lawyer, Mona Ibrahim, and an update reviewing the amendments.
